Opening Keynote: The Hecklers in Your Head: Navigating Imposter Syndrome as a Senior Leader

Leadership can be lonely — especially when the loudest critic in the room is the one inside your own head. In “The Hecklers in Your Head: How to Deal with Imposter Syndrome”, award-winning comedian Sara Barron brings her trademark wit and honesty to one of the most common yet least talked-about challenges facing leaders today.
Why do capable, experienced people still feel like frauds? Why does success so often come hand-in-hand with anxiety, self-doubt and the fear of being “found out”? And how can leaders stop those internal hecklers from holding them back?
Blending comedy, storytelling and surprising insight, Sara explores the pressures of modern leadership with warmth, intelligence and plenty of laughs. Tailored for leaders of membership organisations navigating complexity, scrutiny and constant change, this keynote will leave audiences feeling reassured, energised and better equipped to lead with confidence, even when their inner critic has other ideas.
Imposter syndrome doesn't disappear with seniority, for many leaders, it intensifies. The higher the stakes, the louder the internal critics. This opening keynote confronts that uncomfortable truth head-on, exploring why high-achieving leaders in the membership and professional body sector are particularly susceptible to self-doubt, and what we can do about it.
Drawing on psychology, lived experience, and practical frameworks, this session will help you recognise the patterns of imposter thinking - the catastrophising, the attribution bias, the fear of being "found out" - and replace them with strategies that build authentic confidence.
This isn't about pretending certainty you don't feel. It's about leading honestly and effectively even when you do. You'll leave with tools to quiet the hecklers, reframe failure, and show up more fully as the leader your organisation needs.
A powerful, energising start to the day - because great leadership begins with leading yourself.

Closing Reflections

Leadership development is not what happens in a room, it is what happens after you leave it.
This closing panel brings together voices from across today's programme to draw the threads of the day together: the themes that have emerged, the tensions that remain unresolved, and the questions that deserve to stay with us. It is a moment to pause before the energy of the evening ahead, and to reflect on what today has offered, practically, professionally, and personally.
Panellists will share what has struck them, challenged them, and changed their thinking during the Forum. The discussion will explore the connections between the day's sessions — resilience and decision-making, communication and trust, financial acumen and strategic ambition — and what it means to integrate these dimensions into the complex, human reality of leading a membership organisation.
Crucially, this session is also yours. With space for questions and contributions from the floor, this is a moment for the room to speak,  to share what you are taking away, and what you are going back to do differently.
The Memcom Leadership Skills Forum is at its best when it creates not just insight but momentum. This session is where that momentum begins.

How to Turn Members into a Community of Fans

In fractured times, people want to feel like they belong. Smart brands have realised this, and shifted their spending from broadcasting to passive audiences to building active communities. But what does this mean for membership organisations? How do you turn a traditional membership into a community of engaged peers, fans and advocates of the work that you do? This panel walks through practical examples from the worlds of business, medicine and charity, with next steps for organisations that want to build a more engaged community of their own.

AI in the Real World – From Disruption to Relevance: A Strategic Workshop for Membership Leaders

With over $2.5 trillion flowing into AI infrastructure and services this year alone, the professions you serve aren't just changing — they are undergoing a fundamental transformation in what expertise means, what value looks like, and who members turn to for it.
The platforms and communities disrupting your model don't need your history or your mandate. They just need to be more useful than you are. To remain genuinely useful to the people you serve, you need to think beyond a standalone AI strategy and reconnect with the value you truly bring to members today. The organisations that navigate this well will be those whose leaders have built the capability and leadership to deliver that value.
Damian Watson and Steve Ford will lead an interactive workshop that offers something more useful than a standalone AI strategy: a way of thinking clearly about your proposition, your position, and the experience you offer — so that your organisation remains genuinely relevant to members whose worlds are changing faster than most strategies can keep up with.
Participants will leave with:
•        A clear-eyed view of the competitive pressures facing membership organisations and where the real strategic leverage lies
•        A framework for assessing organisational readiness across proposition, positioning and member experience
•        A grounded understanding of how AI is reshaping member value, professional relevance and the marketplace you operate in
•        A decision lens for distinguishing genuine transformation from technology distraction
•        Greater confidence in leading the harder conversation: not just about AI, but about what your organisation is actually for

Financial Confidence for Leaders: Strategy, Oversight and the Investor's Lens

Senior leaders in membership organisations are expected to interrogate reserves policies, challenge investment decisions and connect financial performance to strategic direction, often without a finance background. This session brings together HaysMac and Rheo to cover both sides of that challenge: the financial reporting and accounting fundamentals you need to lead with confidence, and the investment and strategic oversight thinking that turns financial literacy into genuine leadership capability
